4. Describe the decoration and firing techniques which would have been used to produce a vase like this.

Techniques of decoration:
* vase before firing
* The rough was drawn on the clay with incision / charcoal stick
* Then the painter went round the outside of the figure with a thin (approximately 5mm wide) and painted a line to enclose the figure completely. On the finished pot this line is remarkably consistent in width, and usually "sticks up" in . Done maybe with a very fine brush or a special tool (like those used for cakes)
* Next comes the drawing within the figures.
* Now the was filled in with a broad (the reason for the 5mm line now becomes clear). The "paint" is a refined version of the same clay from which the pot has been made, and so there is no great difference in until the pot is fired.

Techniques of firing:
* degrees Celsius. One firing in stages
* air vent open, burn wood - vase turns
* air vent closed, higher temperature, smoke introduced - vase turns
* air vents closed, temperature reduced, areas where was added stay , and areas where no was added turn
